(6 Squadron, 2 Group/Bomber Wing 40)
Bordeaux-Merignac, France. June 1944.
The Heinkel He 177 “Greif” (Griffin) was a long-range heavy bomber flown by the Luftwaffe during World War II. The introduction of the He 177 to combat operations was significantly delayed, by both problems with the development of its engines, and frequent changes to its intended role. It was intended to be used against the Russian manufacturing infrastructure during the invasion of the USSR. It was used against London during the mini blitz in 1944.
Being able to fly higher than any aircraft flown by the Allies with superior speed for its size this is another example of “what if” it had been produced on time and thus been able to be used to its full potential.
