Messerschmitt Bf110-E Tropical

Model Build

Airfix A03081A Messerschmitt Bf110E Tropical 1:72 Scale

7./Zerstörergeschwader 26,
(7 Squadron/ Heavy Fighter Group 26)
Derna, Libya, 1942

Designed from the outset as a long-range heavy fighter, or Zerstörer, the Bf110 was a radical departure from the norm for aviation thinking in the 1930s. Its twin engine, two seat layout, was a world away from the small and lightweight 109 and Spitfire prototypes. Its role was different, however. Designed to either escort or intercept bombers over long distances, the 110 accompanied the Germon's new form of fast-moving warfare, (Blitzkrieg), perfectly. After a promising start over Poland, Fronce and the Low Countries, the 110 suffered badly at the hands of the RAF during the Battle of Britain.
As a result, its role was changed, and it was pressed into service as a long-range fighter bomber armed with bombs under the fuselage and equipped with external fuel tanks. In this capacity it proved to be highly effective in the Western desert, able to use its long range and ability to loiter to devastating effect. While few 110s made it to the desert, the majority going east to participate in Operation Barbarossa, those that did fight in North Africa made a significant impact and influenced the wat Allies saw the long-range fighter bomber.
